We have read earlier on today on how spiders have made their presence known in North Memphis, covering the ground with plenty of their web so much so that it looks as though snow has fallen. Spider silk, which is one of nature’s oldest materials, has proven itself to be quite the catalyst when it comes to the innovation of wearable material that is lightweight and a whole lot more durable than what we are used to. In fact, in the video above, you will be able to check out just how researchers over at the Oxford Silk Group, which is part of the Oxford University in the UK, have filmed a spider silk harvesting season. The star of the video? The Golden Orb Weaver spider that can produce up to 80 meters of silk at a go – now how about that for a miracle?

Spiders are a whole lot more difficult to cajole into getting their silk as opposed to silkmoths, and since spiders need their own space, obtaining silk from them is nigh impossible, to say the least. At the end of the day, it is hoped that such fabric made from spider silk can be sold to clothing manufacturers in the years ahead, although it will be rather expensive at first, but hopefully the overall cost will drop in due time.
