zune_musicWhen it comes to digital music download platforms, it’s safe to say that back in the day, Apple’s iTunes was the clear market leader. This resulted in other companies such as Microsoft attempting to create services and products that would rival Apple. Zune was the result of one of Microsoft’s attempts (MSN Music was the first).

However fast forward today while iTunes is still happily chugging along, the Zune brand has been relatively quiet and inactive. As you might recall, Microsoft announced that the platform will be retired come 15th of November and it looks like that day has finally come. What this means is that users will no longer be able to use the Zune service or download content from the platform.

According to Microsoft’s support page, “As of November 15, 2015, Zune services will be retired. You will no longer be able to stream or download content to your device from the Zune music service.” However Zune devices like media players will still continue to function as expect (obviously) and your files stored on them will also remain unaffected by the closure.

For customers who were subscribed to the Zune Music Pass, according to Microsoft, “Existing Zune Music Pass subscriptions will be converted to Groove Music Pass subscriptions.“ Talk about the end of an era.
