2016-nissan-leaf-2How many of us have gritted our teeth and have shaken our fists at cars with modified exhausts, revving so loudly for no reason other than to show off? It is also why many of us can also appreciate how quiet electric/hybrid vehicles are when they run. However it turns out that maybe we might be taking the noise from cars for granted.

For those who are blind and who might be hard on hearing, the noises from cars is what tells them that a vehicle is there or is approaching. This is why it wasn’t too long ago there was a ruling in which regulators proposed a rule that would require carmakers of electric and hybrid vehicles to install systems that would make their cars sound noisy, but unfortunately it seems that the ruling has been delayed.

A report from Reuters has revealed that the ruling, which was originally supposed to go into effect this year, has since been delayed until mid-March 2016. A specific reason as to why the ruling is delayed was not given, and all regulators had to say was “additional coordination is necessary.”

It has been estimated that once the proposal is implemented and the rules go into effect, 2,800 fewer pedestrian and cyclists would be injured annually. As it stands, the estimates are at 125,000 injuries a year.
