Chargers for mobile devices are pretty standard and straightforward. Plug the cable into a power outlet or your computer, plug the other end into your phone and let technology do its work. It is pretty standard, but what if it could be improved upon? What if chargers could be smarter and provide more information?

If you think that’s something you would like, you’re in luck. There is a Kickstarter campaign for a device called the UsBidi. What is the UsBidi? Basically it is a smart charger, but what exactly defines it as a smart charger? For starters one of the features is its ability to stop charging when it detects your phone has reached 100%.

This is important because if you’re looking to preserve the lifespan of your phone’s battery, you know that overcharging is one of the ways that kills it quick. So by stopping the charge at 100%, it will prevent the battery from discharging and recharging, which is pretty much how most charging systems work at the moment.

The UsBidi even comes with a built-in LED on the charger itself, thus giving you at a glance the status of the charge. Its creators are also claiming that it will charge twice as fast, but how is that? It’s because the charger will stop data syncing at the touch of a button, thus directing all the power to the charging process.

Now the charger itself does not come cheap and you can pick up charging cables for a fraction of its asking price, which is expected to retail at $36. However if you were to pledge your support, you just need to pay $49 and you will get two chargers.
