The emissions cheating scandal has rocked Volkswagen, wiped billions off of its market value and forced the company to change the CEO as it looks to make amends. It’s going to be a very costly affair for the group after its done paying fines and penalties stemming from lawsuits, rumor has it the company may also dole out cash to owners of its emissions cheating cars.

According to The Truth About Cars, Volkswagen is going to launch a “TDI Goodwill Program” which will offer cash to diesel car owners via prepaid cards. Owners in the United States will receive a $500 universal card as well as a VW-only card worth between $500 to $750.

VW hasn’t confirmed this program just yet but it does tell The New York Times that it will make some sort of an announcement tomorrow. On the other hand dealers have told the scribe that the know that this program is going to be launched soon. It’s unclear as yet which cars will be covered under this program and what restrictions will be placed in the fine print once the program has been made official.

Volkswagen has been making efforts to regain customers’ trust after shocking revelations that some of its diesel powered cars had cheat devices which allowed them to hoodwink emissions tests. It has been offering deals to existing owners so they can easily move on to a new car and it’s also being more liberal with discounts.

It goes without saying that a little bit of money won’t do anything to combat the years of unnecessary pollution caused by these cars, but at least drivers will get some compensation for buying a car which they thought would be much more eco-friendly.
