It was reported yesterday that Volkswagen will announce a “goodwill package” on Monday for owners of diesel-powered cars that were found to be cheating on emissions tests, that’s over 482,000 vehicles in the United States, and now the group has officially confirmed this package. Owners will be entitled to $1,000 in gift cards as well as free roadside assistance for three years.

Volkswagen will be a giving a $500 gift card for dealership credit as well as a $500 Visa gift card which can be used anywhere a Visa-branded card can be used, like everywhere, aside from free roadside assistance for three years. The group has confirmed that this goodwill package will also be provided to Audi owners that have affected vehicles.

This has been a major scandal for the German group, countless diesel engine models were found to contain cheat devices that duped emissions tests and caused unnecessarily pollution for many years. Volkswagen has already replaced its CEO as damage control and is now working to salvage its reputation but it certainly won’t be easy to climb back up after such a big scandal.

Prior to this package Volkswagen has already been providing affected owners with $2,000 worth of trade-in credit, today’s announcement takes the total compensation up to $3,000, $500 of which is essentially upfront cash for their troubles.

Volkswagen has set up a new website where owners have to enter their car’s VIN number, mileage as well as their name and address. They should receive the package within one month.

There are no strings attached to this program, by taking VW’s money owners will not be giving up their right to take part in a class-action lawsuit against Volkswagen, take legal action on their own or give up any potential compensation in the future. This program comes without any stipulations.
