zuk-z1-oakStanding out from the rest of the crowd is something that all of us can identify with – otherwise, why is there a need to wear something different every single day as opposed to eking out a drab existence in some dictator-ruled country? When it comes to smartphones, there is also a wide range of different accessories in which we can use to make them stand out from the rest of the crowd, as some folks might resort to stickers, while others settle for something more traditional like different protective cases. The Lenovo-backed ZUK Z1 takes on a slightly different approach this time around with a special version that boasts of a back cover made from oak wood.

This will be a limited edition model and has been announced in China, where it will come with a sticker price tag of CNY 1,799 (which would be roughly $283 or €259 at prevailing exchange rates). That is a wee bit more expensive compared to the vanilla version, so much so that it is negligible if you do not want to be someone “ordinary” – after all, what price is there for pride when it boils down to an additional CNY 100 ($15 or €14 thereabouts)?

Then again, it is not as though the material used is something so exotic that it will cost a bomb and that cost will then be trickled down to the consumer. The oak used is still special, as it claims to hail from the Appalachian Mountains in the US, hence no two models are the same since your eyes will see the pure, unadulterated color of the wood that has not undergone any dyeing treatment.
