cortana

Microsoft brought over Cortana to the desktop earlier this year with Windows 10 and yet there’s much to be done to make the virtual private assistant even more useful. According to a new report Microsoft is planning on making a major upgrade to Cortana in the next major Windows 10 release titled Redstone, apparently Cortana will be a lot more powerful and will also be able to float around Windows 10 following the update.

Being able to float would mean that Cortana could come up contextually on documents and provide relevant information and offer assistance. It does sound a bit like Clippy but according to The Verge it won’t be annoying rather it’s going to be a powerful search tool.

It’s also said that Microsoft is mulling further integration of Office 365 services directly into Cortana so that they’re available right inside Windows 10. The OS could then serve as a hub for projects with Cortana keeping track of who’s working on a document and bring up relevant information accordingly.

Also rumored for Redstone is an improved Action Center, the notification panel may allow applications to integrate widgets to become much more useful.

It’s said that much of what Redstone is expected to bring is in early stages of development right now so it’s quite possible for Microsoft to axe some proposed features if they’re not ready in time or they just don’t make any sense. Redstone is expected to be launched by early next year.
