battlefield-4-mass-effect-dragon-age-bioshock-dice-frostbiteUnlike companies like Disney, EA has stated in the past that they are a little cautious when it comes to adopting virtual reality technology. This does not mean that they plan to stay away completely, but rather they’re approaching it slowly rather than diving head first. Given that in the past we’ve seen technology flop when it was touted to flourish, it is understandable.

That being said it looks like EA has started to cobble together a small virtual reality team. This is according to a tweet by John Andersson, the technical director on Frostbite at EA DICE. According to Andersson’s tweet, “We’re building a small & collaborative VR team in Frostbite here in Stockholm, creative & tech roles open.”

For those unfamiliar with Frostbite, basically this is the game engine that EA uses in several of their games. Most notable would be its use in the Mirror’s Edge franchise along with the Battlefield series of first-person shooters. However as Andersson states, this is only a small team that they are putting together, at least for now.

What this means is that don’t expect EA to start churning out virtual reality titles anytime soon, but at the very least the company is getting the ball rolling. In the meantime other game engines that do come with native virtual reality support include Unity, Unreal, and CryENGINE.
