Verizon users may get excited today when they get an update notification on their Galaxy Note 5 or the Galaxy S6 Edge+, however it’s not going to be the update that they have been waiting for the most. Big Red is rolling out a security update for both of these handsets, the update is now live and being rolled out over-the-air, which means it won’t be long before it goes live for everybody.

Multiple Android manufacturers committed to providing monthly security updates for their devices once Google announced that it will do that for Android, following the Stagefright vulnerability revelation earlier this year which brought to light a major security vulnerability in Android.

Carriers who sell Android devices have also got on the same timeline for monthly security updates, the December patch for Samsung handsets is now being rolled out by Verizon, it applies the most up to date security patch to the Android version running on the device.

It’s an incremental update which doesn’t add any new features to the handset. Obviously it’s not the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update that most Samsung users have been anxiously waiting for, though earlier today a purported roadmap was leaked online which hinted at when Samsung might start releasing Marshmallow at least for those flagship handsets it has released in 2015.
