Just because a wound has been cleaned and dressed doesn’t mean that you are completely out of the woods yet. This is because there is always a slight chance that it might become infected, and because the wound is hidden under a bandage/dressing, sometimes infection is detected when it is too late, like when you start developing a fever.

However researchers in the UK have recently unveiled a prototype bandage that will actually glow green in color. If the bandage starts to glow, it is a sign that an infection might be taking place and because of early detection, doctors and health professionals can take action as soon as possible.

This works because the bandage contains a gel-like material infused with tiny capsules. These capsules will release a nontoxic fluorescent dye when it comes into contact with bacteria that would normally cause wound infections. The bandage has yet to be tested on humans but the idea here is that it could be used to help with burn treatment.

What happens is that doctors tend to over prescribe antibiotics for burn wounds, especially amongst children due to the fear of infection. However this could lead to antibiotic-resistant strains so by using this glowing bandage, doctors and parents will be able to keep an eye on the wound’s healing process better.
