In recent times, tech companies like Apple and Google have introduced more secure encryption to their devices, making them near impossible to be accessed remotely by anyone else other than the device’s owner. This is obviously good for consumers who value their privacy, and bad for law enforcement who might need access to vital bits of information.
In the past we have heard how law enforcement agencies wanted action taken against companies like Apple to force them to change the way encryption is handled, and recently during the Democratic debate, Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton suggested that maybe the government would need to have a Manhattan-like project to deal with encryption.
According to Clinton, “I would hope that, given the extraordinary capacities that the tech community has and the legitimate needs and questions from law enforcement, that there could be a Manhattan-like project, something that would bring the government and the tech communities together to see they’re not adversaries, they’ve got to be partners.”
For those unfamiliar, the Manhattan Project was a project back in the 1940s which led to the development of the first nuclear weapons used in World War II. That being said, Clinton also conceded that maybe the way they are going about asking for access to encrypted information might be wrong, but at the end of the day she is hoping that tech companies will eventually cooperate with the government.
