The Microsoft Translator app has received a new update today which adds a major feature to it, the app is now capable of translating spoken conversations, with this feature the app now offers a much more natural way to communicate in person even if you don’t know the language. The app is available for both smartwatches and smartphones so users get the maximum amount of flexibility.

It was back in August this year that Microsoft first released the Translator apps for iOS and Android. The apps have received much praised and are now considered by many as a must have if you’re traveling to a destination where the language is not one you’re familiar with.

The new conversation feature for Microsoft Translator is powered by the same translation engine that Skype Translator uses so it brings the software’s advanced machine learning know-how and speech recognition systems to handheld devices. For now the feature only supports translation of spoken conversations to and from Chinese Mandarin, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Microsoft says that it has made the feature work well even if you just have your phone with the app installed but for the best results it recommends using both a smartwatch and smartphone. This eliminates the need for both people to bend over a phone or pass it back or forth. The smartwatch and smartphone combination allows for conversation to take place more naturally and at a comfortable distance.

The updated Microsoft Translator app for Android and iOS is live now and available as a free download from the Google Play Store and the App Store.
