It’s evident that the wearable device market is only going to grow and companies would want to introduce some other wearable devices aside from fitness trackers and smartwatches. If one of Samsung’s latest patent filings is anything to go by then the company might be working on a smart ring accessory. The wearable device would be able to work with the company’s smartphones and home automation systems to provide users with easy access to select features depending on if the ring is rotated clockwise or counterclockwise.

There are several scenarios mentioned in the patent filing which detail how the smart ring might prove to be a useful accessory. A smartphone will be able to recognize the paired ring and then display a custom menu with functions that can be controlled by rotating the ring in either direction.

For example, the menu can be used for turning on a smart TV, opening the blinds or lights, switching on the radio or controlling other smart home devices. Samsung may also find a way to have this accessory work with social networks such as Facebook to provide users with other unique features.

Since this accessory only exists in a patent filing right now it can’t be said for sure if and when Samsung might bring this wearable device to the market, the idea itself is not new, similar smart ring ideas have already been floated by several other companies. Let’s see if Samsung beats them to the market with its own smart ring.
