urinal-bounceUrinals are definitely not the cleanest things in the world, although there has been efforts in the past to make urinals greener than normal through water-saving measures and the like. Having said that, there is still one issue that I have against urinals – the splashback problem. Researchers at Utah State University are keeping their fingers crossed that this will soon be a thing of the past, by redesigning the urinal cake so that splashbacks will no longer be a bane to us men in the future.

Dr. Tadd Truscott leads this particular project, and their new device is being aptly known as a “black hole for urine,” which is definitely an idea worth pursuing. Once again science is inspired by nature, as a super-absorbent moss known as Syntrichia caninervis (or Tortula Moss) was found to be able to collect a whole lot more water than other mosses. Taking that into account, the team came up with a similar structure using Vantablack, a carbon nanotube creation which will allow light to enter and remain there, the setup was tweaked to have it capture urine rather than light.

Of course, it will be some time before it can be commercialized and distributed on a large scale, since this is a proof of concept only as at press time. Meanwhile, learn to aim better and adjust your pressure accordingly.
