sony xperia z5A few years ago, it would be every few months that you would learn of a new Sony phone in the works. They would release two flagships every year, but in between they’d pad their portfolio with low and mid-range handsets to cater to different demographics which we guess is only fair of Sony to do.

However in recent years, Sony has scaled back their efforts a bit and if a recent report from DigiTimes (via Pocketnow) is to be believed, Sony could be introducing only two main Xperia phones for 2016. While DigiTimes has been known for their hit and miss claims, this lines up nicely with an earlier leaked slide that showed two Sony phones planned for Q2 2016.

Now we can’t be 100% sure what they mean by only two models. It is unlikely that the company will ditch all their smartphone efforts for 2016 save for 2 handsets, right? Unless they mean that they will cut down on the variants in each lineup. For example for the Xperia Z5 alone, we have 3 models in the form of the Xperia Z5, the Z5 Compact, and the Z5 Premium.

In any case we suppose it’s best taken with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think? Could Sony stand to reduce the number of models they release every year to just focus on a few key phones?
