Airplanes have become a lot safer over the past few decades. Much work goes into making sure that airplanes are safe since there’s almost always a loss of life when a flight crashes so it’s not like the companies that make planes don’t have an interest in improving safety. One aviation has come up with a concept of a detachable cabin that he believes could help save lives in the event of a crash.
The idea is simple, the cabin of this airplane is detachable, even during takeoff and landing. There are parachutes that will help the cabin land on the ground or even on water after it has been detached from the airplane.
Naturally there are many questions and concerns about this concept, for starters it doesn’t point out what happens to the pilots in the cockpit once the cabin has been detached, and doesn’t count the possibility that the detached cabin could end up crashing in the mountains or on buildings.
One also has to consider the costs associated with making such a plane, it’s going to be a monumental change to the way airplane fusealages are made today, and this could ultimately mean that passengers might have to pay more money to fly on a plane that has a detachable cabin.
However it merits mentioning here that this isn’t the only detachable cabin concept out there. Airbus, a giant in its own right, has also patented a detachable cabin concept however that has more to do with making the boarding process easier prior to takeoff than to potentially save passengers in the unfortunate event of a crash.
