When it comes to using drones as a delivery platform, many companies are interested in doing so – Amazon with their Prime Air program, while DHL too, has ideas of using drones to deliver packages and parcels to their customers. Before a system can be carried out, however, tests will need to be done – and DHL’s parent company Deutsche Post has canceled the proposed flight of new unmanned aerial vehicle, citing winter weather as the culprit for them to take such a step.
<1--more-->A spanking new, unmanned aerial vehicle capable was presented earlier this week, where it was capable of carrying up to two kilograms, or close to 5 pounds of weight, for several kilometers during the proposed delivery process, which is in line with Amazon Prime Air. DHL has had some experience in doing so, relying on a drone to deliver medicine to a remote North Sea island, and this has convinced German authorities to ensure that the local airspace is restricted for test flights.
However, the minor, minor prophet called snow as well as a sudden drop in the mercury made the situation untenable for flying, hence scrapping the proposed test flight. This is despite DHL mentioning in the past that their drone was well suited to see action in areas such as mountain regions, with wind, cold and snow being frequent concerns. Deutsche Post’s board member Jürgen Gerdes did share that “the drone works” and “in the not-so-distant future, drone deliveries will no longer be a niche business”.
