Electric cars are going to be a big part of our future. Major tech companies and conventional car makers are both working on all-electric cars now, some options are already available to interested customers, and if those customers are based in the United Kingdom the government will reward them for purchasing an electric car by allowing them to use bus lanes.

The UK’s Department of Transport has announced new schemes that aim to get more people to opt for cleaner cars, some of these measures are already in place in Norway, and they have proven to work when the idea is to cut down on emissions.

In cities such as Derby and Milton Keynes drivers who own electric cars will be allowed to beat the congestion by driving in bus lanes. In Hackney electric car owners will be able to charge up their vehicles at street lights, in York they will be able to charge up the car at a solar-powered park and ride stations.

Milton Keynes and Bristol will also provide free parking to electric cars. To ensure that the cities are provided enough incentives to go ahead with these measures the country’s Department for Transport has divided £40 million among several cities.

London, the capital city, will get a major chunk of this funding to create “neighbourhoods of the future” in some of its boroughs where electric cars are going to have priority over other cars. Aside from this incentive the government is already providing electric car buyers with a maximum grant of £5,000.
