While the iPad Pro does come with the Lightning port, which is typical of all iOS products, it also sports a Smart Connector which can be used to connect accessories, which at the moment is pretty much limited to both the Smart Keyboard and Logitech’s Create keyboard. However it seems that it does more than connect accessories, at least as far as iOS 9.3 beta 2 is concerned.
First spotted by German developer Stefan Wolfrum (via MacRumors), it turns out that the Smart Connector can also be used to update the firmware of accessories as well. To be more specific, the Smart Connector was used to update the firmware of the Logitech Create keyboard, which according to some reports of users, has been suffering from lag and dropped keystrokes.
That being said, Wolfrum discovered that after updating to iOS 9.3 beta 2, when he plugged in his Create keyboard, a notification popped up showing that a firmware update was available for the accessory, in which he updated and discovered that it seemed to have address the issues with the keyboard.
It is unclear how this works at the moment, as in whether iOS 9.3 came with the firmware inside it already, or if upon plugging in the keyboard, it pinged Logitech’s server to send over the firmware update. Regardless, it’s starting to show that the Smart Connector does have a fair bit of potential that has yet to be fully explored.
