ipad sushiThere has been some research done in the past to suggest that when ordering food online, itt can sometimes lead to you making some unhealthy choices, simply due to the fact that you don’t feel as judged compared to when making an order over the phone. However interestingly enough, that doesn’t seem to apply if you were at a restaurant.

There are several restaurants out there that rely on tablets to allow customers to place an order. The order is sent to the kitchen, and the food is delivered when ready. In a study published in the American Journal of Consumer Research, titled “The Effect of Preference Expression Modality on Self-Control”, it has been found that ordering your food through tablets can actually lead to more healthy choices.

According to the study’s findings, “All experiments showed that, if a choice was communicated orally, respondents preferred the hedonically temptation option (i.e., the high-calorie snack or desert [sic]). When respondents expressed their preference manually, the healthier option won out.”

Based on this, it has been suggested that this could introduce a new way for companies to influence the choices made by their customers. From the end-user point of view, we guess if you’re trying to eat healthy, maybe see if there are any tablet-oriented restaurants nearby to help you out with that.
