phase-one-xf-100mpWhile OEMs love boasting about megapixel size, let’s face it, how many of us actually makes full use of all those megapixels? The end result are photos that are usually too big, and with social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram being where most photos are typically viewed, all those megapixels does seem like a waste, doesn’t it?

However for professional photographers who might need to crop and make huge prints, this is where megapixels are more important, and for the pros out there, you might be interested to learn that Phase One has recently announced its new medium format camera that packs a massive 100MP sensor under its hood.

This is a joint development between Phase One and Sony which has resulted in the XF 100MP. This relies on a full-fledged 100MP CMOS sensor, so typical methods used in the past to “cheat” and create a 100MP image will no longer be needed. Apart from its huge megapixel count, the company is also claiming great low-light capabilities.

Apparently the camera is capable of snapping “clean” photos from ISO 50 up to ISO 12,800, a point which usually results in photos that are too noisy for use. Of course it is not cheap as it is priced at $48,990, a price which we’re sure many professionals will balk at, but if you think your investment will yield even higher returns, then why not?
