pokken tournamentLast year it was reported that the upcoming Pokken Tournament will be released in the Spring of 2016. The good news is that we now have a solid release date as the official Pokemon Twitter account has revealed that Pokken Tournament will be officially released onto the Wii U console come 18th of March, 2016.

For those unfamiliar, Pokken Tournament for the Wii U was announced back in 2014. Prior to this, the game was already around in Japan, although it existed in arcade form, so essentially what is being done here is the arcade version of the game being brought over onto the console. The game will be feature characters from the Pokemon franchise.

It will be similar to the Pokemon franchise in the sense that you get to pit Pokemon against each other. However instead of it being a turn-based combat style like Pokemon, this is more like an arcade fighter game. Think Pokemon meets Tekken, which is actually a pretty apt description considering that the folks behind Tekken, Bandai Namco, will be behind the title.

As for those who have played the game, you might recall that last month, it was also announced that there will be a special Pokken Tournament controller created for the Wii U. This mimics the layout and style of the arcade version, so if you’re more familiar with those controls then the controller could be worth getting.
