A patent application from Samsung has recently been published by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, it adds to the company’s arsenal of patents related to foldable smartphones, the device envisaged in the patent folds like a book and also has a couple of interesting features. Hologram and projector features are integrated into this foldable smartphone.

Samsung details in the patent that foldable smartphones may include a projector and hologram unit, explaining that “The hologram may show a stereoscopic image (3D image) in the air using interference of light.”

On the other hand the projector will project an image onto a screen which may be located inside or outside the device. The patent doesn’t describe how users will actually access these features since no app has been described in the patent.

The foldable smartphone itself is a bit different from what we have seen in the past from Samsung, this iteration folds like a booklet or diary, with a new hinge system making it possible to fold a large display in half when the handset is closed.

As previously mentioned Samsung has many patents related to foldable smartphones but it is yet to bring one to the market. Many expect that 2016 will be the year we see such a handset from Samsung, but so far the company hasn’t indicated any intention to bring foldable smartphones to market.
