The IDC has released new figures that reveal just how many smartphones were shipped in the final quarter of 2015 and the year as a whole. Robust demand in the holiday season saw the global smartphone shipments surge to 399.5 million units in the fourth quarter of 2015 as compared to the 377.8 million units that were shipped during the same time last year. Total smartphone shipments for the year passed 1.4 billion units for the very first time coming in at precisely 1.43 billion units.

For the past couple of years, Samsung has turned out to be the top global smartphone vendor and it’s the same story this time around as well. It shipping 85.6 million units in the fourth quarter of 2015, a 14 percent increase compared to the same time last year. Throughout 2015, it shipped 324.8 million units registering a 2.1 percent increase compared to the 318.2 million units shipped in 2014.

Apple retains its second place on the list with 74.8 million units shipped in the fourth quarter. Strong demand for iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus in the United States and China enabled Apple to ship a total of 231.5 million units last year, that’s a significant 20.2 percent increase compared to the 192.7 million units shipped in 2014.

Huawei registered the strongest year-over-year growth, 37 percent to be precise, as it shipped more than 100 million devices in the past year. It’s one of China’s few brands that’s consistently providing to make its ground in the very competitive global smartphone market.
