Sony-SmartWatch_3_900In a press release sent out recently, Sony has announced that they have acquired Altair Semiconductor. For those who are unfamiliar with the company, we can’t say we blame you since companies behind the scenes rarely get the same attention as the company selling the final product, but basically Altair Semiconductor is best known for their LTE modem chips.

Now we know what you’re thinking, does this mean that Sony will start making their own chipsets for their smartphones? There were rumors about that last year, although Sony has since denied those plans. So what does Sony plan on doing with the company? According to the press release, it will most likely find its way into IoT devices.

According to Sony, “With the acquisition of Altair, Sony aims to not only expand Altair’s existing business, but also to move forward with research on and development of new sensing technologies. By combining Sony’s sensing technologies – such as GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) and image sensors – with Altair’s high-performance, low power consumption and cost-competitive modem chip technology, and by further evolving both, Sony will strive to develop a new breed of cellular-connected, sensing component devices.”

Basically instead of your IoT devices relying on just your home WiFi to stay connected, in the future more devices could also connect via cellular, which might come in handy when the WiFi is down or if it isn’t feasible to stuff WiFi components in the device. In any case we guess we’ll just have to wait and see how this one pans out, but in the meantime we guess it’s business as usual.
