htc-vive-consumer-edition-1

It was expected that HTC would formally unveil the consumer version of its Vive virtual reality headset at the Mobile World Congress 2016 and that’s precisely what the company has done. The consumer version comes with new features, refreshed branding and an updated headstrap, it builds upon the features that were introduced with Vive Pre. HTC has also finally confirmed the Vive price and release date.

Vive Phone Services is a new feature that allows users to receive and respond to incoming and missed calls, get text messages and even shoot quick replies directly through the headset.

Also included with the headset are two updated wireless controllers with haptic feedback and dual stage triggers, a front facing camera, a redesigned headstrap that provides greater stability and balance as well as an improved visual system with brighter displays.

For a limited time customers will also receive two VR games with the Vive for free, Fantastic Contraption and Job Simulatore, aside from the two controllers and Lighthouse stations that are needed for positional tracking.

Pre-orders for the HTC Vive consumer edition open February 29th. HTC promises pre-order fulfilment and full commercial availability by April 2016. HTC Vive comes with a price tag of $799, that’s $200 more expensive than the Oculus RiftÅ, but nevertheless, it’s priced well in the range of mid-range and high-end gamers who are open to adopting VR.
