The iPad might be one of the best selling tablets in the market but as the tablet market overall comes under pressure, Apple’s slate is likely to feel the pinch as well. A new research report suggests that iPad sales could decline by as much as 40 percent in the first quarter of this year despite the fact that Apple has tried to jolt its tablet sales by introducing the larger iPad Pro and is likely to launch the iPad Air 3 next month.

The research report predicts that iPad sales will come in at just 9.8 million units at the end of Q1 2016, the lowest number since Q2, 2011. If this does happen the iPad will register a sales decline of 39.1 percent from Q4 2015 and a year-over-year decline of 20 percent.

Decline in tablet sales won’t just be limited to Apple. The report predicts that 46.65 million tablets will be sold in the first quarter of 2016 and this itself will be a 28.6 percent decline from the previous quarter and an 8.6 percent drop as opposed to the previous year.

Going by these figures even though sales of the iPad are predicted to drop, Apple is most likely going to retain the lead as the largest tablet vendor in the world, predictably being followed in second place by Samsung.
