fitbit-forceWearing a fitness band while working out isn’t mandatory, but it is not a bad idea either. It helps you keep track of things like your heart rate, calories burnt, the number of steps you’ve taken, and etc. However it seems that over at the Oral Roberts University, it looks like the school’s administration is making it mandatory for incoming freshmen to wear a fitness tracker.

According to NBC News, students at the university were always required to keep track of their fitness, but it was usually done manually by turning in written logs. However with the invention of fitness trackers, this has become a much simpler and efficient process. It also seems that the grades of students will also be based on their level of aerobic activity.

In a statement made by ORU President William M. Wilson, “ORU offers one of the most unique educational approaches in the world by focusing on the Whole Person — mind, body and spirit. The marriage of new technology with our physical fitness requirements is something that sets ORU apart.” However it was not mentioned exactly how much physical activity students are required to do, although a report from The Tulsa World suggested that students need to walk at least 10,000 steps a day.

Speaking to The Tulsa World, Mike Matthews who oversees the school’s data systems hopes that they will be able to find some kind of correlation between exercise and academic success.
