It appears that Nintendo is looking into virtual reality once again after the Virtual Boy flopped some two decades ago. Company president Tatsumi Kimishima has decribed virtual reality as “interesting technology” in a recent earnings call and according to a new report, Nintendo has said that it’s researching virtual reality even though it doesn’t have any specific plans to launch a new product in the near future.

Nintendo has tried its hand at commercial VR with the Virtual Boy that was released back in 1995. It really was one of the first commercially available VR devices but it didn’t do so well because of its high price, monochrome display and the fact that it caused nausea and headaches.

Virtual reality has come a really long way since then. While nausea and headaches can still be experienced with modern headsets the prices have come down significantly and users are no longer limited to monochrome displays. There’s an abundance of content now and as more companies jump into the fray, VR looks like a market that’s ready for takeoff.

This is why it makes sense for Nintendo to want to make an entry into the world of virtual reality once again. It will give the company another avenue to focus on and potentially reap the benefits since Nintendo has been tackling with dwindling revenue and slow Wii U sales.

Nintendo has only said that it’s researching the technology which means that it may not come out with a VR product soon, but it may very well have one for us in the future.
