It has become a yearly tradition to expect a new major Assassin’s Creed title from Ubisoft but the company just announced that it’s going to do things a bit differently this year. Ubisoft has confirmed today that it’s not going to release a major Assassin’s Creed game in 2016. It’s taking a year off for this franchise to re-examine it, and as a result, there won’t be a new major title this year.

Ubisoft has had its hands full with Assassin’s Creed recently. Last year it came out with the London-based Assassin’s Creed Syndicate which many saw as a return to form for this franchise.

It has also been busy with the upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie that is scheduled to hit the big screen on December 21st, 2016. The movie stars Academy Award nominee Michael Fassbender in the lead role.

In an update posted on its blog today, Ubisoft says that it’s “stepping back” to re-examine the entire franchise, which is why it has decided there won’t be a new major game in 2016.

Ubisoft says that it has learned a lot from the feedback it received after the release of Unity, it has also updated its development process and has recommitted to making Assassin’s Creed a “premier open-world franchise.”

It’s taking this year off to evolve game mechanics and to ensure that it properly delivers on the promise of Assassin’s Creed providing players with a unique gameplay experience. Ubisoft will share more details about this soon.
