fitbit surgeSmartwatches and fitness bands are two different types of wearables. Smartwatches can be thought of as more all-rounder devices, while fitness bands, as the name implies, is aimed more for fitness use. That being said, with smartwatches being able to do what fitness bands do, why even have fitness bands, right?

Turns out that Gartner thinks so as well, so much so that they predict that eventually smartwatches will overtake fitness bands in terms of adoption. The research firm also predicts that wearables will grow as much as 18.4% in 2016 and pull in $28.7 billion in revenue by the end of the year, and that a good portion of that revenue, $11.5 billion will come from smartwatch sales.

In fact it doesn’t seem surprising that smartwatches could overtake fitness bands. After all fitness band makers like Fitbit have recently started creating devices that resemble smartwatches. However, it is understandable that for now fitness bands might be still in the lead.

After all they are cheaper, and generally speaking because they have less features, they aren’t as battery draining compared to smartwatches. They can also be used by those who still want to wear a regular watch but at the same time are looking to track their biometrics, but what do you guys think? Would you choose a smartwatch over a fitness band?
