snapchat-phishingIt looks like the online world is one where you would need to be on your guard most of the time, as making a single mistake could prove to have some serious repercussions, depending on the industry in which you are in, of course. If you just leak out family photos by accident, that is all right, but trade secrets because someone has gained access to your email accounts through a phishing scam? That’s not looking too good, bud. A Snapchat payroll employee has reportedly opened the wrong email just last week, falling victim to a phishing scam.

This phishing scam impersonated Snapchat’s CEO Evan Spiegel, where the hacker who posed as Spiegel asked for payroll information for current and previous employees. After obtaining such information, the hacker exposed such information to the rest of the world. Snapchat has already taken steps to remedy the situation by issuing a public apology to its employees, but will that be enough?

I guess even the introduction of a Birthday Lens to your Snapchat account is not going to do much to add to the festive mood when you are celebrating your birthday, while the whole world knows how much you earn and which tier you are on. After all, the damage has already been done – once something gets out to the Internet, someone, somewhere, has a cache of it already.
