xiaomi logoAs some of you guys must have read by now, it seems that US Mobile is claiming that they will be officially offering Xiaomi and Meizu handsets. Given that Xiaomi still does not really have a presence in the US yet, no doubt this is exciting news for users who might be interested in trying out their devices.

However it turns out that it was too good to be true. In a statement Xiaomi provided to us, it seems that the company had in no way authorized US Mobile to sell its phones. The statement reads, “Recent reports have indicated that Xiaomi products will be available in the US. Xiaomi only offers a small selection of accessories for sale in the US through Mi.com. There are no plans to sell smartphones through any authorised distributors in the US. US Mobile is not authorised to sell Xiaomi products in the US.”

This was also confirmed by Ron Amadeo of ArsTechnia who posted on Reddit as to why the announcement by US Mobile seemed a bit suspicious. He pointed out issues like how US Mobile does not actually sell the phones, but rather they are purchased via Omni Electronics HK who is an importer.

In any case, last we heard, Xiaomi was supposedly still a year or so away from officially breaking into the US market, so in the meantime unless they change their mind, chances are the phones you do buy are most likely grey market imports, so don’t expect Xiaomi to have your back (in the US) should anything go wrong.
