Deadpool has established that “R” rated movies can do good business at the box office, it had the biggest opening for an R-rated movie ever, so the model does appear to work. In the past studios have consistently released PG-13 rated superhero movies just to enhance the box office appeal but it appears Deadpool’s success has made Fox think again which is why it has confirmed that it’s targeting an R rating for the movie.

Fox announced at the New York Toy Fair that the upcoming Wolverine movie, which is also going to be Hugh Jackman’s last portrayal of the X-Men character, is most likely going to be rated R.

It’s not like Fox hasn’t tried its hand at R rated movies. Kingsman: The Secret Service, which came out last year, turned out to be a very big hit. This goes to show that studios don’t necessarily need to water down movies to enhance box office appeal if the movie itself is good enough to rake in the big bucks.

So what does an R rating for Wolverine mean? Well, you can expect graphic fight scenes and obviously not-so-nice-words that you wouldn’t want your little ones to hear. For the adult fans, though, it just might be the treat they need before Jackman finally bows out as Wolverine.
