ringing-bellsDoes the name Ringing Bells ring a bell (pardon the pun)? Well, if it doesn’t, perhaps the fact that this is a $4 smartphone manufacturer might make you sit up and take notice. They are the ones behind the $4 Freedom 251 smartphone, and the company has now come under investigation by Indian authorities.

Freedom 251, the $4 smartphone that has raised a fair number of questions after its release, happens to be an entry-level Android smartphone that runs on a quad-core processor, and it retails for a paltry $4 in India as an unlocked device. No doubt this is the world’s cheapest smartphone to date, having turned many a head in the process.

Kirit Somaiya, leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party which is the largest political party in India, has already filed a formal complaint against Ringing Bells, citing that Ringing Bells has violated Section 420 of the IPC and the IT Act. In layman’s terms, Ringing Bells is said to be ‘cheating’.

Somaiya is adamant that it remains impossible for a smartphone manufacturer to sell a device for just $4 without any kind of carrier subsidies attached to it, and earlier this year, Somaiya also attacked Ringing Bells, citing that the Freedom 251 is but a Ponzi scheme. Still, the $4 price point has not led droves of people to pick up the Freedom 251, where it is touted to be a flop, but this has not stopped the police from looking into the case. It would be interesting to see how things pan out in the end.
