self-cleaning-toiletWith smart homes being the buzzword of late, you can be sure that anything in the house that has the word “smart” attached to it as a prefix would gain attention. Well, how about smart toilets? The city of Chennai in India has received the country’s very first self-cleaning smart toilets, which are better known as eToilets.

These eToilets would make plenty of sense, especially when one takes into consideration that majority of the cities in India happen to have very poor public sanitation, where urinating in public is the norm, while toilets tend to be extremely filthy that it can be difficult to even breathe inside, or are rare and few in between.

With 180 of the eToilets being installed in Chennai, it is hoped that things will change for the better in the long run. Such self-cleaning public eToilets can be hunted down via an Android app known as, guess what, eToilet. This allows folks in Chennai to locate such toilets, give them ratings, as well as feedback – not to mention suggestions for potential “hotspots” for future installation. Officials from the Greater Chennai Corporation will have another app that lets them monitor hygiene levels, usage figures and water availability at each toilet from a remote location.

Such facilities, despite being unmanned, can clean itself prior to entry and more importantly, after use, thanks to an exhaust fan and the ability to flush with just 1.5 liters of water after 3 minutes of use, while 4.5 liters will be used if the clock passes the 3 minute mark. Not only that, the door will be washed automatically after a few rounds of use, now how about that?
