Truth can be stranger than fiction, and this could have been a story that was published in a tabloid, but unfortunately it isn’t. In fact, a 19-year old man in China actually took steps to sell off his newborn daughter for a pittance, using the money he received to purchase a new iPhone as well as a motorbike. I suppose one could say that this is a case of “willing seller, willing buyer”, but somehow it does not feel right in the gut.
The transaction took place close to a year back, where the young father who is known as A Duan allegedly sold his 18-day-old daughter to a stranger. The price? 23,000 yuan (which is equal to approximately $3,500 thereabouts), with the transaction having took place in the city of Tong’an, which lies within the province of Fujian.
As the father did not managed to complete high school at that point in time, and the mother being below the age of consent when their daughter was conceived, it certainly was a choice made due to financial considerations, as the father relied on Chinese chat service QQ to perform the transaction. As for the buyer, he claimed that he bought the little baby girl for his sister. The police managed to track down the mother later on, and the mother confessed, “I myself was adopted, and many in my hometown sell their children, because I can’t grow them. I really didn’t know it was illegal.”
The parents have since been sentenced, with the man to spend three years in the slammer, while the mother will have a suspended sentence of two and a half years. It looks like the buyer’s sister is still looking after the child at the moment.
At least this is out of desperation and seemingly, necessity due to the circumstances of the unprepared parents, and not like some folks who are willing to exchange their virginity or house for a new iPhone.
