uberWhile we know that Uber now allows one to make one way trips over to Mexico, this would require a human driver – but what if one day, you were to be able to make such a trip across the border in a self-driving car? That might be the direction in which Uber is heading towards, with a report citing that Uber has already ordered a number of $100,000 Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedans – which in turn, increases speculation concerning the company’s plans to move into self-driving automobiles.

While Mercedes-Benz does not have fully autonomous driving capabilities at this point in time, it does deliver driver-assistance features in the likes of lane-keeping and blind-spot monitoring. With Uber on the lookout for autonomous cars, it did look as though they were “shopping around.”

Both Uber and Mercedes-Benz remained mum on the matter when approached. Whatever the outcome is, it does seem as though the S-Class sedans that are set to arrive would mean that Uber intends to roll out ultra-premium rides in the future, as opposed to a fully autonomous passenger experience. Still, if such cars can be retroactively fitted with self-driving capabilities in the future, it might just be the platform that Uber is looking for. Only time will be able to tell.
