Toyota has announced that it’s going to make automatic braking systems the near-standard on almost all of its Toyota and Lexus models at almost every trim level by the end of next year. The models in which automatic emergency braking will not be available as standard will include the Mirai, Lexus GX, Scion iA, the 4Runner and the 86 which was previously known as the Scion FR-S.

Toyota announced at the New York Auto Show that it’s going to include the Lexus Safety System and the Toyota Safety Sense packages with automatic emergency braking on almost every new vehicle by the end of 2017.

By setting this ambitious target to provide automatic braking in almost all models, Toyota has demonstrated its commitment to ensuring that the automatic emergency breaking technology is widely available in four years ahead of the 2022 industry target announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“We are proud to help lead this industry in standardizing these systems and bring automated braking to our customers sooner rather than later,” said Jim Lentz, CEO of Toyota Motor North America.

25 out of 30 Lexus and Toyota models will come with this essential safety feature as standard equipment. Model-specific target dates will be announced later.
