whatsapp_formatWhatsApp used to be a very barebones messenger app back in the day. You could send messages, receive messages, and that was about it. Over the years the app has naturally evolved, such as adding support for voice calls, and the latest update even included the ability to share documents.

That being said, it looks like in the latest beta for WhatsApp, the company has introduced the ability for users to format their text. This means that soon you will be able to send messages that are either in bold or in italics, as you can see from the screenshots above. This works by either typing * in the front and back of your messages to bold it, or _ in the front and back of your messages to italicize it.

Of course the person who receives your message will need to have the latest version of WhatsApp to see it, so if they don’t your messages might look a little weird. At the moment these two formatting options appear to be the only ones available as the folks at Android Police attempted to create strikethrough texts without any success.

Do take note that this is only for the Android version of WhatsApp beta. We’re not sure when the next update will be released that will feature these formatting options, but either way we’ll keep our eyes peeled for it. In the meantime if you’d like to get the beta you can join the beta program on the Google Play Store.
