nintendo-wii-u-review-26While the Wii U gaming system by Nintendo holds a lot of promise and potential, safe to say that it did not exactly take with the public. We’re not sure if it’s because gamers wanted something more powerful, or if there was a lack of triple A titles for the console that other competing platforms had. Granted first-party titles like Mario Kart and Smash Bros. managed to help boost sales, but it still trails behind the competition.

Now according to a report from Nikkei as tweeted by Dr. Serkan Toto (via VentureBeat), word on the street has it that Nintendo is expected to halt production of the Wii U console this year. It is unclear as to why the Wii U is being discontinued, but safe to say that it probably has something to do with Nintendo launching the Nintendo NX console, which last we heard is expected for a mid-year launch.

However as noted by Dr. Serkan Toto, just because production of the Wii U ceases doesn’t necessarily mean that Nintendo will begin selling the Nintendo NX this year, even though it is widely believed to be the case. It would be odd for Nintendo to stop production of one system and not have another ready to go on sale, right? Unless the loss from producing Wii Us that they can’t sell is greater than stopping production entirely.

In any case many are expecting Nintendo to share details of the NX later this year, possibly during E3, so check back with us then for the details. Until then and until we hear from Nintendo officially, take this with a grain of salt.
