Last month after what felt like forever, Microsoft finally released its Windows 10 Mobile update for Windows Phone 8.1 handsets, with initial support for devices like the Lumia 430, Lumia 435, Lumia 532, Lumia 535, Lumia 540, Lumia 635 with 1GB RAM, Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL, Lumia 735, Lumia 830, and the Lumia 930.However the version that was released was the 32-bit version of the operating system, which is rather unfortunate as some of the device has Snapdragon chipsets that supports 64-bit operating systems. The good news is that Microsoft has since confirmed (via Windows Central) that the 64-bit version of Windows 10 Mobile will be released soon as well.
This comes via a piece that Microsoft ran about its Senior Technical Fellow, 74-year old Dave Cutler, who will be honored in the Computer History Museum for his work on the computer industry and with Microsoft. The article mentions Cutler’s role in helping Microsoft ship 64-bit Windows systems, and one portion read, “At the time, some questioned why Microsoft developed a 64-bit system; today most computers are 64-bit systems and even our phones will soon have a 64-bit operating system.”
This seems to indicate that yes, a 64-bit version of Windows 10 Mobile will be coming soon. No word on when this will be taking place but no doubt many are looking for it as it will introduce support for more RAM, more registers, lower-power consumption, and more.
