Tesla CEO Elon Musk often drops hints about the projects that he’s working on in his talks and tweets, and it appears he’s dropped a hint about a potentially game-changing project during a talk at a transportation event sponsored by the government of Norway. It appears that Musk is working on some kind of a self-driving bus.

Tesla has made a huge contribution to bringing all-electric cars to the mainstream. The company’s $35,000 Model 3 sedan is a truly mass-market electric car that’s more affordable than the ones it has previously made. It’s also leading the way in semi-autonomous driving technologies and certainly wants to enable its cars to drive by themselves.

Autonomous technology can also prove to be useful for mass transit, as Musk revealed that “we have an idea for something which is not exactly a bus, but would solve the density problem in intercity situations,” adding that we need to rethink the entire concept of public transport and create something that people like a lot more. “I don’t want to talk too much about it,” knowing full well that he’s going to get grilled by journalists for more details and yet he’s only interested in tickling our imagination right now.

When Musk was asked by the interviewer if he was referring to the Hyperloop, Musk made it clear that he wasn’t, and said that “there’s a new type of car or vehicle that I think would be really great, and actually take people to their final destination and not just to the bus stop.” Musk also said that “autonomous vehicles are key” to this plan.

Whatever Musk is working on it sounds very interesting but from the way he’s talking about it right now, we might have to wait for a considerable amount of time before Musk reveals more about this project.
