In October last year, The New York Times teamed up with Google to ship more than one million Google Cardboard VR viewers to its home delivery subscribers with a copy of The New York Times. The iconic scribe is doing this once again. It has confirmed that in conjunction with a new VR experience that’s going to be published in The New York Times, it’s going to team up with Google again to ship 300,000 Cardboard viewers.

Cardboard is a very basic and cheap VR solution that Google came up with over a year ago. You just need to slot your smartphone into Cardboard to get a VR experience. The company has been working to add more features to the VR experiences that work with this viewer.

The NYT subscribers that have been chosen for the latest round of free Cardboard deliveries were selected for the duration of their subscriptions. It will enable them to see the “Seeking Pluto’s Frigid Heart” VR experience that’s going to be published in the NYT.

It’s a short film that will allow viewers to fly over Pluto when viewing with Cardboard, view its moons and even get an experience of standing on its surface. The film has been narrated by science reporter Dennis Overbye and produced by Jonathan Corum, Graham Roberts, Yuliya Parshina-Kottas and Evan Grothjan from The New York Times graphics desk.

Seeking Pluto’s Frigid Heart is going to be published on May 19th on the NYT VR app that’s available for both Android and iOS.
