overwatchPlaying competitive online games means that there are times you will win and there are times you will lose. Sometimes there are players who can be gracious in the face of defeat, but there are those who refuse to accept them and would rather quit a game halfway at the first sign of trouble rather than sticking it out to the end.

Rage quitters are annoying and can no doubt turn the tides in a game and so far we’ve seen developers come up with various ways to handle quitters. Overwatch is Blizzard’s upcoming shooter and the good news is that the company has recently implemented some penalties for those who quit games halfway.

According to Blizzard, “If a player’s game completion percentage falls below our required threshold, they will now receive a warning message (this percentage is calculated based on their 20 most recent games). If that players continues to leave games after receiving this warning, they will incur a 75% XP penalty for future games.”

Blizzard adds, “This penalty will be removed once the player raises their game completion percentage above our required threshold (again, this percentage is calculated based on their 20 most recent games).” Will this be an effective deterrent? Maybe, but given that Overwatch is still in beta, we suppose Blizzard still has time to figure out what will work best ahead of the game’s official release in May.
