volvo-xc90-hybridIt is no secret that many carmakers are working on self-driving vehicles. In fact many have already begun testing them on small scales. Volvo is one of those carmakers who is currently testing out the technology, but it looks like the company is looking to kick things up a notch by deploying a pretty huge test over in China.

While we’ve seen companies like Google test their self-driving cars on the road several cars at a time, Volvo will be taking things further by testing as many as 100 self-driving cars on the road at the same time. This is not a done deal yet as Volvo will have to get the necessary clearance and find the proper city in China to test out their vehicles.

However if they are successful in doing so, no doubt this will help further the development of self-driving cars and also see how multiple self-driving cars on the road will be able to function together. According to CEO Håkan Samuelsson, “There are multiple benefits to [autonomous driving] cars. That is why governments need to put in place the legislation to allow AD cars onto the streets as soon as possible. The car industry cannot do it all by itself. We need governmental help.”

Of course if China isn’t feasible, maybe Volvo could consider the Isle of Man in which the area is supposedly being developed to become a hub for self-driving car tests.
