Gone are the simpler days when one could leave their bike out and not have it stolen. In fact these days thieves are becoming more desperate to the point where hi-tech bike locks have to be invented in order to ensure our mode of transport isn’t stolen and ridden off in the middle of the night.

That being said, when there’s a will, there’s a way, but here’s something that might put thieves off. Dubbed the Bike Mine, this is a tiny explosive alarm that according to its creator Yannick Read, will explode with so much force that it will create a 150db blast of sound, which will be more than enough to wake you and your neighbors up.

It’s not a particularly fancy anti-theft tool, it just borrows from the concept of personal protection tools like rape whistles where hopefully the idea of being seen/caught is enough to put the thief off from trying to go any further. Of course the downside is that if they are brazen enough, once the sound clears they’ll be well on their way and there’s really nothing that can be done.

However like we said, hopefully the loud bang will shock and surprise them enough to pack up and run. The detonator is a one-time use device which means you’ll have to refill it. No word on how much the refills will cost, but the basic package with 3 detonators is priced at £49. If you’d like to pledge your support, head on over to Kickstarter for the details.
