ehang 184 droneDrones are pretty handy. They can be used for all kinds of things, such as fishing, crowd-watching, crowd-control, and now it looks like the delivery of emergency organs could be one of its uses as well, thanks to a Chinese drone company by the name of Ehang and their 184 drone.

If you’re wondering why the drone and company sounds so familiar, it is because earlier this year at CES, the company showed off the drone at the event, a drone which the company had originally touted as being able to ferry human beings as an alternative means of transportation. However it looks like the drones are now being commissioned by Lung Biotechnology to build 1,000 drones based on the 184 that can deliver organs to hospital.

This makes sense since using cars or vans would mean that they are subject to the traffic on the street. It also makes more sense than deploying helicopters which aren’t as readily available, not to mention their size means that it will require a hospital with a landing pad in order for them to make the delivery.

Dubbed MOTH (Manufactured Organ Transplant Helicopter), Lung Biotechnology Chairman and CEO Martine Rothblatt told Digital Trends, “We anticipate delivering hundreds of organs a day, which means that the MOTH system will help save not only tens of thousands of lives but also many millions of gallons of aviation transport gasoline annually.”
