Facebook Groups don’t get as much publicity as some of the social network’s other products do, but they are a good resource for creating or finding like-minded communities. It appears that Facebook is looking to improve the way how people find groups that might appeal to them. It’s testing a new feature called “Discover” which makes it easier for its users to find such groups. It factors in several variables to suggest groups that users might be interested in.

The new Discover feature for Facebook Group looks at the user’s geographic area, their interests and the interests of their friends to recommend groups that users might be interested in. It’s going to improve over time and thus, users will find the recommendations improving as well.

Facebook hasn’t rolled out this feature for all of its billion-plus users just yet, that’s because it’s testing this feature out currently, and it will only provide it to all users if the tests show that Discover really makes a significant improvement to the user experience. If not, then Facebook might very well just axe it altogether.

This feature will help Facebook increase engagement among its users as people with similar interests who are located close to each other will interact more in groups, thus bringing the results that Facebook is looking to get out of this test.
